Window tint laws in launch states

Window tint limits are state law, not a national chart. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 205 sets glazing rules for vehicles as manufactured. Aftermarket film is a separate layer of state rules, usually written as a minimum light transmission through the finished window.

These pages summarize the cited statute in plain language, link the official text, and show the date we last read it. They are not legal advice. Confirm the current rule with the shop and, if needed, your local enforcement agency before anyone starts cutting film.

Common questions

What does VLT mean for window tint?
Visible light transmission is the percentage of visible light that passes through the glass. State rules usually measure the glass and the film together, not the percentage printed on the film box.
Is factory privacy glass already tinted?
Many SUVs and trucks leave the factory with darker rear glass. Adding film on top of that glass can push the combined number below the legal floor even if the film looks “legal” on a chart.
Does Tint Record tell shops what shade to install?
No. We cite the statute, link the official source, and tell you to confirm with the installer. Listings do not include legal advice.
