Texas window tint laws
This page restates Texas Transportation Code § 547.613 so drivers can ask a shop better questions. It is not a permit, a measurement, or a substitute for the official text. Combined glass-plus-film readings are what officers and inspection stations typically use.

What the cited statute says
- Front side windows
- A sunscreening device, in combination with the glass, must have light transmission of 25% or more and luminous reflectance of 25% or less. Texas DPS states windows immediately to the right and left of the driver fail inspection below 25% light transmission.
- Rear side windows
- Texas DPS treats side windows to the rear of the driver as exempt from Transportation Code regulation.
- Rear window
- No listed restriction when the vehicle has an outside mirror on each side reflecting the roadway for at least 200 feet. Without those mirrors, the 25% transmission / 25% reflectance limits apply.
- Windshield
- Film must stay above the AS-1 line (or end five inches below the top if there is no AS-1 line), must not be red, amber, or blue, and in combination with the glass must meet 25% transmission and 25% or less reflectance. DPS allows clear untinted UV film on the windshield without a medical exemption.

- Medical exceptions use a signed physician or optometrist statement kept in the vehicle; DPS no longer issues exemption certificates.
