What Texas law says

Front side windows must allow at least 25% light through the glass and film together. Details below are from the cited statute, not a shop chart.

Front side windows: A sunscreening device, in combination with the glass, must have light transmission of 25% or more and luminous reflectance of 25% or less. Texas DPS states windows immediately to the right and left of the driver fail inspection below 25% light transmission.
Rear side windows: Texas DPS treats side windows to the rear of the driver as exempt from Transportation Code regulation.
Rear window: No listed restriction when the vehicle has an outside mirror on each side reflecting the roadway for at least 200 feet. Without those mirrors, the 25% transmission / 25% reflectance limits apply.
Windshield: Film must stay above the AS-1 line (or end five inches below the top if there is no AS-1 line), must not be red, amber, or blue, and in combination with the glass must meet 25% transmission and 25% or less reflectance. DPS allows clear untinted UV film on the windshield without a medical exemption.
