Window tint laws in Katy, TX

Officers typically measure the glass and the film together. Use this page to ask a Katy shop a better question, then confirm Texas Transportation Code § 547.613 before anyone starts the job.

What Texas law says

Front side windows must allow at least 25% light through the glass and film together. Details below are from the cited statute, not a shop chart.

Front side windows
A sunscreening device, in combination with the glass, must have light transmission of 25% or more and luminous reflectance of 25% or less. Texas DPS states windows immediately to the right and left of the driver fail inspection below 25% light transmission.
Rear side windows
Texas DPS treats side windows to the rear of the driver as exempt from Transportation Code regulation.
Rear window
No listed restriction when the vehicle has an outside mirror on each side reflecting the roadway for at least 200 feet. Without those mirrors, the 25% transmission / 25% reflectance limits apply.
Windshield
Film must stay above the AS-1 line (or end five inches below the top if there is no AS-1 line), must not be red, amber, or blue, and in combination with the glass must meet 25% transmission and 25% or less reflectance. DPS allows clear untinted UV film on the windshield without a medical exemption.
